6 Effective Home Remedies for Wisdom Tooth Pain

At a certain age,  teeth emerge between the ages of 17 and 25. They begin their journey through the jaw, cross the gums, and integrate into the chewing system. The process can generate discomfort. Thus, we offer six home remedies for wisdom tooth pain.

Normally, the mouth does not have room for all 32 teeth (including the four wisdom teeth). On some occasions, these teeth follow an erratic path and are not located in the corresponding space, affecting other teeth and the gums, a situation that can cause infection and pain. In these cases, dentists speak of an impacted wisdom tooth.

If the wisdom teeth appear at the wrong angle or position, the accumulation of bacteria, infections, and dental caries is facilitated. Jaw pain, swollen gums, ear pain, infection, cysts, an unpleasant taste in the mouth, and damage to other teeth are some symptoms caused by an impacted wisdom tooth.

Home Remedies for Wisdom Tooth Pain

Home remedies in addition to facilitating pain management also help reduce swelling.

  • Crushed garlic and ginger

Crush some raw garlic to achieve a paste texture. Then mix with chopped fresh ginger and apply to the gums. This combination is very effective in combating the pathogens that attack teeth and gums. If you want to learn about garlic toothache remedy, you can check out our article here

  • Ice pack

Put an ice pack on your cheeks for periods of 5 minutes to reduce inflammation. The cold, due to its anesthetic effect,  reduces the pain of impacted wisdom teeth.

Applying gentle heat further relieves tension and stimulates blood flow to the area.

  • Tea bags

The tannins in tea have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. They aid in reducing inflammation and killing bacteria.

To use this remedy, prepare a cup of tea, without sugar, and store it in the refrigerator with the bag in the cup. When the tea is cold, the bag will be removed and placed on the affected area.

  • Onion

This vegetable is used in the preparation of much of the food we consume for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. In other words, an onion could help reduce swelling.

How to apply it? A piece of onion is first cut, then chewed in the affected area for a few minutes until the pain subsides. Onion juice enters the gum and helps reduce inflammation.

  • Clove

Clove is a topical analgesic that reduces pain caused by wisdom teeth.

How to apply it? Take a clove and place it on the particular tooth causing the pain. Close the jaw without chewing. Keep the glove in place until the pain is reduced. If clove oil is preferred, moisten a gauze or cotton pad with the oil and place it on the affected area.

  • Salt water rinses

In 2021, a study was conducted with 47 people who had undergone periodontal surgery. They used salt water rinses and found that they have anti-inflammatory properties.

This is one of the most popular home remedies. It is suggested to rinse the mouth with warm boiled water and a tablespoon of dissolved salt several times a day. This will help kill bacteria on the gums and reduce inflammation. To learn more about this remedy, click here.

When is it Required to Treat Pain in Wisdom Teeth?

Generally, two situations can arise, causing the wisdom teeth to hurt: the first is when they are coming out, particularly in an inappropriate position, and the second is when they need to be extracted due to a lack of adequate space in the mouth

When there is damage to nearby teeth or the jaw bone, your dentist may recommend the removal of all your wisdom teeth. Another reason to recommend the extraction is that these teeth prevent the correct development of other teeth.

It is common after the intervention to experience swelling, bleeding, and pain. There are several options to manage this postoperative situation and relieve pain.

Care After Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Applying an ice pack to the cheeks in the inflamed area helps reduce swelling after wisdom teeth extraction. Do it for 15 minutes in a row, rest for 5 or 10 minutes, and repeat the cycle.

Another home remedy is chamomile tea. It has analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. After hours of surgery, placing cold packs of chamomile on the affected area speeds recovery. You can also place the bag directly on the gums and try to gently bite it to release fluid.

Clove oil can also be applied for its analgesic effect. This is an effective home remedy when applied 12 hours after surgery. With a cotton ball, apply a few drops to the inflamed gums, rubbing gently. The application can be repeated three or four times during the day.

In the postoperative period, you can also use water rinses with diluted salt. Indications for the use of this home remedy are warm boiled water and a tablespoon of dissolved salt, three times a day.

A complement to these remedies during the postoperative period is to rinse with thyme for its therapeutic properties. What is the formula? Mix 50 grams of thyme in two cups of water, then bring it to a boil. Strain or filter it, let it cool, and use the infusion with daily brushing and flossing.

These home remedy suggestions will help at least momentarily to improve the pain. However, it is necessary to go to a dental professional or a specialist to determine the appropriate treatment to improve the pain and identify the dental problem.
