Laser Teeth Whitening With Zoom

The dental whitening procedure known as Zoom  is currently available to patients to improve the appearance of their teeth. Those that present unwanted stains or discoloration due to the habitual use of certain food or drinks with natural or artificial dyes will find it of value.  The technique has been in use for several years now, and whitening techniques have improved over time.

What whitening systems exist?

Currently, the gels used to achieve teeth whitening are hydrogen peroxide or carbamide hydroxide. Any of these give good results, but their effectiveness varies, depending upon the concentration used. Another factor that influences whitening is the release of oxygen to carry out the oxidative process of the dye molecules that have affected the teeth; for example, by increasing the temperature. (See Dominguez, A., García, JA, Costela, A., & Gómez, C. (2011). Influence of the light source and bleaching gel on the efficacy of the tooth whitening process. Photomedicine and laser surgery, 29 (1), 53-59. It can also activate by means of the application of light –  from halogen light, LED light, ultraviolet light or laser rays. (See https://doi.org/10.1089/pho.2009.2751.)

Which system is the most effective for brightening teeth?

There are several comparative studies on the effectiveness of teeth whitening systems, however there is no consensus on the type of system that is best to achieve maximum resu7lts.  Studies show great differences in effects, especially in the  sensation of sensitivity in the post-whitened teeth that can last from a few hours to a few days after the first session.(See  Paliska, J., Stipetić, A., Tarle, Z., Ristić, M., Ban, T., Vujićić, N., & Pichler, G. (2011). Colorimetric assessment of different tooth whitening procedures. Acta stomatologica Croatica, 45 (4), 258-267.)

Among the whitening systems showing the best results under many investigations, the light lamp from the Zoom system has yielded better results after the third appointment. However whitening by activating the gel with laser light generates less sensation of post-whitening sensitivity mentioned in the same study.

It can be concluded that at present, a variety of alternatives to achieve good results of teeth whitening are available in different systems, each one duly tested and qualified for use in dental care, and most also achieving brightening of the altered color tones of the teeth.
